Do Sugary Foods Hurt Teeth?

Sugary foods can hurt your teeth in many ways – here are some damage types caused by sugars that transform into acids in your mouth almost instantly:

  • Tooth sensitivity – if your teeth are sensitive to cold, hot or sweet foods or beverages, the cause of the sensitivity is almost invariably the weakened enamel on the surface of the tooth. In some cases, the weakening is caused by a mineral deficiency that originates in dietary, hereditary or illness-related causes or by too vigorous brushing, but in most cases the enamel becomes weakened by the acids that appear in the mouth when the sugar from the foods and the drinks consumed is transformed by the bacteria in our mouth;
  • Cavities – acids can also cause holes in the enamel, exposing the deeper layers of the tooth and causing discomfort or pain and should be treated by a Lone Tree dental office;
  • Tooth infection and tooth loss – small cavities that initially affect only the surface of the tooth and are left untreated are exposed to the harmful action of acids that make the holes deeper. Cavities that affect the deeper layers of the tooth can cause infections, pain, swelling and will eventually lead to the loss of the tooth, so make sure you get your dental cavities treated in the early phase.
